Gender expression
Gender transition, expression and identity tool kit, published by CBRE, suggests that: ‘Gender expression refers to the way in which someone expresses their gender to society through clothes, makeup, hairstyles, and their outward appearance and mannerisms.’
The University of Oxford Equality and Diversity Unit, Training, resources and glossary [accessed February 2020], suggests gender expression is a: ‘Term used for the external characteristics and behaviours that are socially defined as male or female. Often, but not always, trans people seek to make their gender expression match their gender identity.’
Stonewall suggests gender expression is: ‘How a person chooses to outwardly express their gender, within the context of societal expectations of gender. A person who does not conform to societal expectations of gender may not, however, identify as trans.’ Ref https://www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/faqs-and-glossary/glossary-terms
